A “Ladyboy” generally refers to a male to female transgender person or an effeminate gay man in Thailand. The actual term is kathoey, or katoey. The Thais do not necessarily consider a ladyboy a man or a woman, but a third gender. Ladyboys are accepted in Thailand as who they are. Many believe this is mainly due to the fact that the majority of Thailand is Buddhist, which emphasizes tolerance. If you have attended a cabaret show somewhere in Thailand, you’ve seen a ladyboy before.
Some people may be afraid of ladyboys or are unsure about them and have only heard rumours and maybe even horror stories. My experience with them has never been anything like this at all. I’ve seen plenty of them in Pattaya and a few in Bangkok. They’re just like me and you, but just lead a different lifestyle. If you’re curious as to how to spot one, just look for the tall girls that better than the rest.
